Principal Shannon Thorson, spent the first half of her career literally climbing the ladder through various government agencies. Her first role was as Firefighter with Marion County Fire District #1 and she eventually worked her way up to Fire Marshal for the City of McMinnville Municipal Fire Department, where she served for over 13 years. Thorson was active on a state and national level as President of the Oregon Fire Marshals Association. She initiated a state-wide education and accreditation process for Fire Marshals, which was adopted as an Oregon Revised Statute and has been utilized as a model elsewhere in the Country.
Following the Trade Center Bombings of 2001, Thorson was deployed to New York City where she served as the Ground Zero Logistics leader within the Ground Zero envelope, coordinating the services of hydration, first aid, meal service, and chaplain services for recovered souls and maintaining the first aid relief and hydration stations within the Ground Zero envelope. Several years later she was also deployed on another national emergency in the consolidated city-parish of New Orleans, LA to assist in the recovery from Hurricanes Rita/Katrina.
For eleven years Thorson served on the City of McMinnville Economic Development Team, which included City department heads and representatives from related entities. Shannon was intimately involved in each commercial and residential development within the City limits of McMinnville and the expanded fire district area. Such experience provided mastery of land-use zoning, permitting processes, building codes, and invaluable insight into the delicate interactions between government and the private sector.
Time spent on the McMinnville Economic Development Team instilled in Thorson a deep love for real estate investing and entrepreneurial ventures. While still with the City, Thorson became licensed as a General Contractor and began pursuing small residential development projects and launching businesses. Her work in this arena has continued and consequently, she wields a significant portfolio of work related to launching business, building rehabilitation, and restoration of residential and commercial structures. To fund this exciting work, Thorson became adept in obtaining grant funding and has stewarded multiple state and local grants related to economic development initiatives and to the preservation of historic properties.
In managing her own portfolio, and those of others, Thorson has come to master an understanding of the underappreciated correlation between the value of one's real estate and its building use and occupancy. Her strategies, specifically in this regard, are proven to deliver twenty two percent higher returns on real estate investment properties.
